World Oceans Day
The ocean is what Innahura Maldives Resort does best, it’s warm with a near constant 28 degrees, it has a huge crystal clear lagoon, and nearby reefs in the atoll are absolutely full of amazing things to see! World Oceans Day is celebrated on 8th June each year and seeks to highlight the need for protecting these important ecosystems. The theme for the 2023 event is ‘Tides are Changing‘ which celebrates a movement towards putting the ocean first. The ocean covers the majority of our planet, but only a small portion of its waters has been explored and, despite humanity’s reliance on it, the ocean receives only a fragment of our attention and resources in return…but tides are changing!
The Maldives is one of those few places on Earth where the ocean dominates life – you simply cannot escape it, and why would you want to? The endless blues, the incredible marine life and the playground for watersports are what bring people to the Maldives, but the oceans are so much more. Providing half of the oxygen we breathe, absorbing a considerable amount of atmospheric CO2, hosting a level of biodiversity unrivalled anywhere on the planet, as well as providing food and a livelihood to millions of people, are all things worth protecting.
Coral reefs and seagrass meadows in the Maldives are globally important ecosystems and there are 44 Marine Protected Areas across the country, four of which are in Lhaviyani Atoll and are sites famed for manta rays, sharks and pristine environment. It’s not only areas of ocean that are protected in the Maldives, it’s specific species too with sea turtles, dolphins, napoleon wrasses, clams, corals, whale sharks, and reef sharks included. Snorkelling and scuba diving at Innahura will give you a first-hand experience of just how incredible our oceans are, no experience is necessary – we have perfect conditions for beginners and our professional and friendly team can teach you to snorkel in our shallow lagoon as well as take you on your very first diving adventures. Those who prefer to enjoy the ocean while keeping their head above water can join our water sports team for a range of activities.
By enjoying the ocean you become a great ambassador for its protection and we invite you to come and enjoy every aspect of the ocean at Innahura, then share your incredible images and tag not only #innahuramaldives but #Protect30x30, #WorldOceanDay and #OceanClimateAction too. Spread the word and help to achieve protected status for 30% of the world’s oceans by the year 2030 – the tide will only change for the ocean through collective action.
