World Environment Day, on 5th June, is a great time to reflect on what we as individuals, resorts and communities are doing to make greener choices and live more sustainably in harmony with nature. Here at Innahura Maldives Resort, the team and our guests wake each day and go about their work or leisure activities amidst some of nature’s most breathtakingly beautiful displays – from the remote sandy and palm-fringed islands to the bustling coral reefs beneath the surface of the Indian Ocean. and we all want to take care of what we have, to preserve it for future generations and for nature’s sake itself.
The Maldives started off as an obscure diving destination in 1972 and is now a popular tourism hotspot with more and more choosing the iconic resorts for their holiday getaway. With the increasing popularity of the Maldives, comes an increasing need to protect the environment and at Innahura we take that responsibility very seriously. We continually evaluate our operations and we are especially proud of our solar huts that generate hot water for all the rooms, an in-house desalination and water bottling plant, minimal use of plastics, ocean-friendly bathroom amenities, sustainable diving and snorkelling practices and supporting local communities.
During your holiday with us, you can help to protect the Maldives by taking only photos not shells, not touching or feeding marine life and being careful not to damage the corals including using reef-friendly sunscreen. If there’s a beach clean-up event during your visit, come and join in and help us collect any marine debris that may get washed ashore – it could help to save wildlife. Recycling and rubbish disposal is not easy in a nation with hardly any land so please consider taking your empty plastic bottles home with your for disposal.
